/ Balcony - Venice Biennale 2014
As collaborator of Tom Avermaete
What’s special about the balcony is that it is an element that connects different spheres. “It links up the public and private, the individual and collective, the indoor and outdoor”, explains Avermaete. “That makes it strongly culturally determined.” Based on research into the diverse forms the balcony appears in – throughout the world and through the ages – Avermaete (Method and Analysis) has taken a systematic approach to organising the exhibit. In the middle of the exhibition space, which is part of the main pavilion, are two balconies: one transparent and modernist, the other a screened-off vernacular balcony. The visitor can walk around in them to experience the balcony as a transitional element, as space between two different spheres.
