I am delighted to have exhibited our project “Flaoting Trieste” at the 𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐑Æ 𝐀𝐐𝐔𝐀Æ curated by Guendalina Salimei at the 19th Venice Biennale 2025. The research-project authors of “Flaoting Trieste”  are Leonardo Zuccaro Marchi, Pierre-Alain Croset and @Aleksandra Bartczak, @ShubhamMajumder, @Nebojsa Jeremic. The research-project was supported by Craft DAStU- POLITECNICO DI MILANO, Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani Centro di Competenza Territori AntiFragili / MUR Dipartimenti di Eccellenza, DAStU Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani of Politecnico di Milano.

The rising sea poses a significant risk to the Italian coastlines; in fact, thousands of square kilometers are at risk of being submerged by 2100. Floating habitats are emerging as innovative solutions to contemporary environmental challenges. The United Nations Round Table of 2019 on Floating Cities recognized Sustainable Floating Settlements as strategic tools in the fight against climate change and the resulting mass migrations. In 2024, Leonardo Zuccaro Marchi (PoliMI/DASTU) and Raffaele Pernice (UNSW Sydney) organized the international symposium “FLOATING HABITAT” (https://floatinghabitat.polimi.it/)  which offered a critical interdisciplinary perspective on the subject at a global scale. Research has continued at the pedagogical level at the Polytechnic University of Milan, through various dissertations on waterfronts worldwide. In particular, the thesis of Aleksandra Bartczak regarded nature-based solutions for the waterfront of the Old Port of Trieste and was supervised by Pierre Alain Croset and Leonardo Zuccaro Marchi. Starting from this proposal, and previous collaborations in Trieste with @LAND srl, we envisioned a new floating habitat for Trieste. This new floating human settlement explores the possibility of accepting the rising sea and learning to coexist with it rather than attempting to interrupt it with technology.  The sea regains its own territory,  the port, which was artificially built as reclaimed land from the late 19th Century;  then, in a future scenario, the new buoyant master plan will overlay the sea, floating in a sustainable synergy, balancing natural and built elements.
